Meet Saturday 12/14/13

Looking forward to another great meet this Saturday!

We will be taking our yearbook picture before the meet at 12:30pm on the concrete steps just outside the entrance of the Ramsey. BE ON TIME!! If you are late it will make us late for our 1:00 warm up. JV please come too, we will also take a separate picture for the OCMS yearbook. If the weather is bad, come inside the lobby and we will take the picture inside. Please wear the new gray and blue sweatshirt and gray pants.

The team dinner will be at the Edelen's at 6:00pm Friday night, 12/13. Direction to Edelen's home----

From Butler's Crossing/OCHS area- Hog Mountain Rd dead ends into Hwy 441 (Macon Hwy) in front of the Stone Store and the new Golden Chick. Turn left at light towards Athens (going towards loop and Timothy Rd). Take a right onto Spartan Lane(before the loop and Friendship Presby Church) going towards front entrance of Athens Academy. We are at 1210 Spartan Lane on the right corner of Spartan Lane and Knob Creek, BEFORE you reach entrance to Athens Academy. Our home is a red brick ranch style, with a Santa flag at the front door. If you get lost, please call Ben Goss at 706-614-8687. He, Craig Edelen, Emily Deal and Bonnie Knight will be hosts until Kendall can get home!

Directions to Team Dinner at the Weimers' House

Below are the directions to the Weimers' house for the team dinner this Friday night at 6:00pm:

1181 Willowynd Way, Watkinsville

Take Simonton Bridge Road out of downtown Watkinsville. When you pass First Baptist Church on your right, turn right on Norton Road. Cross the RR tracks and then make a left into Willowynd Subdivision. Most of the way down on the left will be our house on a hill. The lot next to us is vacant, so you'll see the basement and 2 stories of our gold and brick house easily. Our driveway is really steep, so we wouldn't recomment parking on it except at the very bottom. Across the road is a drainage pond with ample space to pull off for everyone if you'll angle your cars. If you need to call our house it's 706-705-1345. It will be cold so we'll have the fires going and the pasta ready to get everyone going for a great start to the 2013-14 swim season!

Team Updates

It is just over 2 weeks until our first meet on Saturday, Nov. 16th.  Warm ups are at 1:00pm with the meet starting at 2:00pm.  Coach Bond will be sending out the meet sign up sheet sometime next week.

We will be having our first team dinner on that Friday, Nov. 15th at 6:00pm at the Weimers' house (thanks for hosting!).  Directions to their house will be sent out as it gets closer.

Most of the suits that were on "back order" have arrived, we are still missing about 5 boys suits.  We are expecting those in the next few days, when they arrive all the suits will be distributed.  The t-shirts are being ordered, they should arrive shortly also, as well as any items that had to be exchanged.

11/16/13 Meet Volunteer Sign-up

Karen Materne has done our "sign up genius" for the Nov. 16th meet.
OCHS is in charge of running this meet so we need all the parents to
help out.  We had a lot of senior parents leave last year so we need
some new parents to step up.  Most of the jobs are very simple, here is
a little description:

Timers: Push stop watch buttons at the beginning and end of races, very
easy.
Runners: Pick up sheets and take them to the timing room, very easy.
Heat sheet sales:  If you can count money, you can do it.  Job lasts
about 1 hour.
Relief person: Fills in for timers that have to go to the restroom.
Meet Marshall: Directs swimmers out of congested areas on pool deck,
usually a dad who likes to boss kids around, very easy and kinda fun.
Timing room volunteer: Paper work stuff in air conditioned room, easy
Diving table:  Kendall will brief you...

Practice Starts Soon

It's October and our first high school practice is less than 3 weeks away!  Make sure you have turned in all your physical forms, transportation forms and any fees that are due.  We have ordered all the suits, caps, etc.  and hope to get them in the next few weeks, but be sure that you have your own practice suit, goggles, cap and kick board when you come to the first HS practice. (Divers obviously just need a practice suit!)

Awards Banquet

The awards banquet is Sunday, March 9th at 6:00pm at the Oconee County Civic Center.  It is a covered dish dinner with the team providing chicken, bread, and drinks.  In order to get a variety of dishes, here is the list of what you should bring:

JV and Freshman:  starchy things such as pasta, potatoes, corn

Sophomores:  green veggies or vegetarian casseroles

Juniors:  desserts  - let's hope they are a lot of Juniors! ;)

Seniors:  green salad or fruit

Please bring a LARGE portion, swimmers and divers eat a lot.  Please bring a serving spoon with your dish also.  We will eat first and have the awards right after dinner.


We are also collecting money for the coaches gifts, contribute whatever you are comfortable giving.  You can drop off a check at the front desk of OCHS with Anne Sewell, drop it at the board office with Karen Materne or mail it to my home:

Congratulations to our state Water Warriors!!

What an incredible weekend we had!!  Our boys team of swimmers and
divers ended up 3rd and took home a trophy!  So awesome!

Top 3 finishers who got medals included:

Annie Williamson: 2nd place in the 50 free
Wil Masters:  3rd place in the 500 free
Boys 400 free relay (Wil, Robert, Michael,Jacob):  3rd place

Our girls team came in 6th overall, and we had lots of kids place in the A finals and B finals.

We broke a total of 11 OCHS team records over the weekend:

Girls 200 medley relay, girls 200 free relay
Annie: 50 free, 100 free
Wil: 200 IM, 500 free

OCHS scored 189 points to win the Area Championships by 5 points.  OCHS JV scored 99 points blowing away their competitors.  Our future looks bright.  Way to go Water Warriors!

The area meet this Saturday is also senior recognition day.  We have a huge group this year, 7 boys and 5 girls who will be graduating.  Seniors and their parents need to be at the pool no later than 12:30 and should dress nicely for this event.  Swimmers and their parents will be recognized in a pool deck celebration before the meet.  


Seniors please fill out the bio form and bring it to the pool deck.  The announcer will read from this as you are being recognized.

The warm up starts at 7:00 am Friday, Feb 8th at the Georgia Tech pool.  As said before, you must provide your own transportation (no bus) and make your own reservations. The phone number for the Georgia Tech Conference Center is 1-800-706-2899. The rate is $109.00, but after tomorrow (Tuesday) the rate goes up to $159.00.  Ask for the OCHS swim and dive group reservation block of rooms.

 Coaches,

 We are eagerly anticipating a great 2013 GHSA State Swim and Dive meet at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center February 8-9. With your assistance last year we were able to conduct a great event for the athletes, coaches and spectators. Your volunteers provided the backbone that was an extremely well run state meet. We are again asking for your help this year. We would like to ask for your help in securing volunteers for this year's meet. The primary areas we will need help will be in the areas of timing, crowd control, awards staging, table workers for diving and hospitality.

 If we could ask your help in communicating this with your swimmers' parents and your booster clubs it would be greatly appreciated. It is an excellent opportunity for them to have a front row seat for the action, as well as help us state a well-run event. We have all attended well run meets and poorly run meets and know which one we would like our state meet to be.

 To sign up for the meet your parents can visit www.ghssca.com/GHSAVolunteers.aspto reserve their position.   There, they can provide some basic contact information, select the job they want, and which session or sessions they can work. Jobs will be available on a first come first served basis. While the pay isn't much to brag about their contribution will be invaluable.   All we ask you to do is share this information with your parents so we can go into the meet with all of our positions staffed and guarantee on time start times for each session.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 19th
ALL DAY INVITATIONAL

I think the warm up is around 9:00 am., with the meet starting around
10:00.  Coach Bond will update you on this.  It will last until around
7:00 pm, so eat your Wheaties.  The whole team is expected to stay all
day unless cleared by a coach to leave. 
(no JV at this meet)



SATURDAY, JANUARY 26th
AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS, SENIOR RECOGNITIONS

The meet time is the same as our previous meets, warm at 1:00, meet at
2:00.  Our seniors will be recognized by walking across the pool deck
with their parents, looking good, right before warm ups.  Coach Bond
will announce that exact time also.  There is a JV competition, so
please all JV kids attend!

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, FEB 8th and 9th
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, GEORGIA TECH POOL

For those who have (or will) qualify and relay members (to be announced), here is the schedule:

Friday:  7:00-9:00 swim and dive warm ups.
           9:00-1:00 swim prelims and all rounds of diving
Saturday:  11:00-1:00 swim warm ups
                 1:00-4:00 swim finals

Just like last year, there will be NO BUS.  You are responsible for your own transportation.  Hotel information has been posted.

Double room is $109.00. There is no breakfast included, but there is a Waffle House right next door, 10 steps out of the hotel.  The parking is $18.00 overnight and there will be a parking fee at the pool, so carpooling is good!  The pool is about 2 minutes from this hotel, without getting on the interstate.

You of course, do not have to stay overnight, but the traffic may be bad Friday morning.  I have stayed at this hotel and it is very nice.

The reservation cut off date is 1/22, after that you will not get the $109.00 rate.

At this meet we are responsible for 4 timers per session, 2 each in lanes 5 and 6, and 1 office person per session.  We have already taken care of the announcer and safety marshal that we are responsible for as well as providing lunch for the officials and meet volunteers.
